“Design is not making beauty, beauty emerges from selection, affinities, integration, love.”— Louis Kahn, American Architect (1902-1974)
Rational Beauty is a design firm based in Brooklyn, a blog floating in the ether, and an aesthetic philosophy.
When technique is sparked with imagination, it can lead to the creation of something wondrous — akin to a new life form. And while such beauty may appear chaotic, or even random, it is supported by a scaffolding of rigor, training, and discipline.
I stumble across many such iterations of rational beauty in the course of my workday, as well as far beyond the boundaries of my studio walls. And as often happens in life, sometimes the back story, the footnote, and the allusion turn out to be more compelling than the original subject. Such is life.
Rather than simply tossing such flotsam and jetsam overboard, I find pleasure in curating it and sharing it here with you. Hence you will find people, projects, and approaches that spark my imagination and perhaps speak to others as well. Please have a wander around, and if you feel so inspired, send me a line and tell me what you think.
